Bocamina
Potosí, a colonial mining town in Bolivia. At the pithole, faces of the workers leaving the mine. These faces, turned into still images, are looked at by children. Images of other times?
Potosí is a city with a heavy history. This weight gets somehow visible when walking through the old city center or the mining districts. Through a short film by Harun Farocki, I got to know the painting “Descripción del Cerro Rico e Imperial Villa de Potosí” by Miguel Gaspar de Berrío from 1758. It is a kind of map, an attempt to describe a territory. I wondered about how old images influence the way we think about a place. I wanted to describe a place, and I wanted to film people reacting to images.
